The Right Mental Imagery for Weight Loss is Surprisingly Effective
If you have the right mental imagery for weight loss on your side, you may have a bigger advantage on your side than you think. Recent research has revealed that proper visualization is a powerful contributor to pursuing weight loss goals.
A new intervention called Functional Imagery Training (FIT) is proving to be highly motivational for people who are overweight. The study showed that the FIT intervention produces a rate of weight loss that is five times better than talking therapy alone.
Mental Imagery for Weight Loss You can Measure in Inches
The research also showed that people who used the FIT mental imagery for weight loss were able to lose 1.6 more inches around their middles within a span of six months than those using talking therapy.
The study involved the participation of 141 people who were all overweight based on their BMI. All the participants were placed in either the Motivational Interviewing (MI) or the FIT group. MI is a therapeutic technique where the individual receives a counsellor’s support in order to highlight, develop and verbalize their needs so they can motivate themselves to change. It also focuses on the reasons the individual wants to change in the first place.
FIT has a number of similarities to MI, but it takes things further. It uses multi-sensory imagery to delve into the desired changes by teaching people how to understand and practice their own motivational imagery. Everyday behaviors and the additional support through a mobile app promote the right mental imagery for weight loss practices until they become a regular cognitive habit.
Both mental imagery for weight loss techniques received four hours of individual consultation with the expert. Neither the FIT nor MI group participants received any additional information or dietary advice from the researchers.
FIT Mental Imagery for Weight Loss
After six months, the FIT mental imagery for weight loss participants lost an average of 9 pounds. The MI participants lost an average of 1.6 pounds. After a year had passed, six months after the end of the intervention, the FIT group was able to continue its weight loss.
Six months after the completion of the half year study, the FIT group continued their mental imagery for weight loss and lost an average of another 14.2 pounds. That said, the MI group lost only 1.48 pounds more by the end of the year.
