Living Naturally: How to Make Your Own Natural Cosmetics

Ingredients for a handmade body scrub

There are a host of cosmetics you may use on your body every day that are actually more harmful than you realize. But taking a do-it-yourself approach to these everyday items means you’ll be in control over what goes on and into your skin. You’ll know exactly what’s in these cosmetics, so you can rest assured they’re safe.

Below is a list of natural cosmetics and personal care products that you should always make yourself to reduce your exposure to harmful ingredients.

Deodorant

Deodorants often contain ingredients that may be harmful to human health, such as parabens and aluminum.

To make your own all-natural deodorant, you can mix 6 tablespoons of coconut oil, 4 tablespoons each of baking soda and cornstarch or arrowroot, and optional essential oils for fragrance. Apply a small amount, using your fingertips, to each underarm and rub it in.

Another option is to use rubbing alcohol by spraying it onto your underarms. You can also add essential oils for fragrance, or tea tree oil to boost its odor-killing properties.

Eye Makeup Remover

Eye makeup remover is one of the easiest natural cosmetics to make right at home.

Simply take a bit of coconut oil onto your fingertips and gently rub it in circles onto your eyes. Then dampen a cotton pad and use it to wipe away eye makeup. Wash your eyes with a natural cleanser and enjoy moisturized, clean lashes and eyelids.

Toothpaste

Conventional toothpastes contain controversial ingredients, including fluoride (which some health groups argue is a risk to human health), artificial sweeteners, dyes, sodium lauryl sulfate, and triclosan.

Start by combining 1 teaspoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of finely ground sea salt, a drop of peppermint essential oil, and a few drops of water. Apply the paste to your toothbrush and brush away.

Body Lotion

When you apply body lotion to your skin, you’re putting all of its ingredients into your bloodstream once it’s absorbed. This means that all of the potentially harmful chemical-based ingredients and artificial fragrances in lotions can get into your system and potentially cause health concerns in the long run.

Craft your own natural body lotion by simply combining a ½ cup of coconut oil, 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil, and a few drops of rosewater or an essential oil like lavender. Then apply a small amount to dry skin.

Being health-conscious has never been easier, as you can make a variety of natural cosmetics using simple ingredients in your home.
